Lisson Gallery Represents Otobong Nkanga Artist’s Works

The Lisson Gallery is located in New York, London, Shanghai and Beijing. The gallery now presents Otobong Nkanga, who has participated in a number of major biennials over the past few years.

In 2024 Otobong Nkanga artist will hold her first solo exhibition in Lisson. She will create a new tapestry for the upcoming group exhibition Matter as Actor at two of Lisson’s London locations.

Nkanga will retain her representation in her galleries in Amsterdam (Gallery Lumen Travo) and in Paris (Galerie In Situ – Fabienne Leclerc).

Nkangam is a multidisciplinary artist who works with tapestries, installations, photography and more. otobong Nkanga artist is known for her research practice, which examines environmental issues, their intersection with socio-political realities, and the invisible connections between them.

Nkanga’s work constantly highlights Africans and their position in the international supply chain, highlighting the continent’s role as a vital source of raw materials. Destructive large-scale projects are an integral part of the colonial conquest of natural and human resources.

Otobong Nkanga artist makes us bear witness to these topographies of land and labor, to remember who creates and suffers for the everyday products and luxuries we take for granted.

Nkanga’s work has been exhibited all over the world, including at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the Center Pompidou in Paris, and the Haus der Kunst in Munich.

Otobong Nkanga artist has had major solo exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria, Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Villa Arson in France, Gropius Bau in Berlin and the Zeitz African Museum of Modern Art in Cape Town.

Nkanga has participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale, Documenta 14 in 2017, the 2019 Sharjah Biennale, the 2015 Lyon Biennale, the 2014 Berlin Biennale and most recently the 2022 Busan Biennale.

In 2019, she was named the first winner of the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award, which includes $100,000 and a solo exhibition at the Henie Onstad Museum of Art in Norway.

Otobong Nkanga artist is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. In July, she will be the subject of a survey at the Institute of Contemporary Art of Valencia in Spain. Her art will be included in the Dear Earth: Art and Hope in a Time of Crisis themed exhibition opening at the Hayward Gallery in London in June.
