How To Start Decorating Your Home

Decorating your own house is both a blessing and a curse. With so much to consider, it’s no wonder many people feel overwhelmed by the prospect of having to decide on what goes where and why. You also have to decide on what kind of theme you want, if any. There’s a lot to think about but it can be an empowering thing to do to come into your own space.

Let’s look at some tips to help you decorate your space and make it your own.

Decide On A Decorating Style

If you can manage to pin down a decorating style you want to work with, you’re halfway there already! For consistency’s sake, consider matching the interior design of your house to the external design. For example, if you’ve moved into a farmhouse, decorate the inside to match.

The same goes for a modern house. If your house was built after the 1950s then a modern interior design will probably be most suited. Think clean lines, and earth tones to add a softness to these lines.

A contemporary house will be most suited for a contemporary interior, which is a style characterized by minimalism. The color scheme is usually sparse, with primary colors sometimes used as accents.

Do One Room At A Time

Start with whatever is most important to you. This could be the bedroom, living room, or dining room. Whichever room you decide to tackle first, make sure to start and finish it before moving on to the next room to keep you from getting overwhelmed at any point.

Start With The Biggest Features In A Room First

The biggest piece of furniture in a room will naturally become the focal point. As such it’s important to make sure that whatever this may be, that you decide on it first so that you can work around it however you like.

Once the main feature is settled on, then it’s time to add your personal touches to reflect your personality. This could be anything from framed art prints to family photos.

Add More Layers To Your Rooms

Decorating is more of a marathon than a sprint. The more time you spend in your room the more you’ll begin to realize the little things you want to tweak and improve. This could be things such as lighting, textiles, pillows or throws, or even splashes of accent color.

Befriend Paint

Make paint your new best buddy. There’s no more effective way to transform a blank canvas than by painting. Choose bright and vibrant colors that match your personality. Choose the wall you want to bring the most attention to and paint it a bold color. Doing this will create a focal wall. Then you can replicate this color in pillows or rugs and this can bring the room together.

The Bottom Line

Decorating a house is a real opportunity to express yourself and create a space that reflects who you are, how you live, and what your tastes and values are. However, with so much to do it can quickly become overwhelming if you don’t approach it methodically.

First, choose your decorating style. The easiest way is to match the interior design of your house to the external. Then break it down by going one room at a time. Start with the biggest features and slowly over time add more elements as you see fit. This part is best done after you’ve lived in the space for some time and seem what will fit.

Remember decorating your home is best done slowly and not rushed.
