Warhol Foundation Puts Nearly $5.2 Million Into 78 Arts Groups
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has announced its Spring 2026 grant recipients, committing nearly $5.2 million to 78 arts and cultural organizations. The awards, released on July 8, 2026, stretch across museums, artist-run spaces, and nonprofit institutions nationwide, with a notable emphasis on smaller organizations and experimental programming.
This year’s cycle is divided into four grant types: Program Support Over 2 Years, Exhibition Support, Curatorial Research Fellowships, and Projects Grants for Small-Scale Organizations. The last category is new, created for groups with annual budgets under $200,000. Twenty organizations received those project-based awards, totaling $530,000.
Among the small-scale recipients are Golden Dome in Los Angeles, which will design a garden; Soon is Now in Beacon, New York, which will realize an installation; Seafoam Palace in Detroit, which will mount a site-specific commission in a warehouse; and Art from the Inside in Minneapolis, which will organize a group exhibition of commissioned works by formerly incarcerated artists. The foundation said the expansion reflects its view that smaller institutions are essential to the health of the arts ecosystem, not peripheral to it.
Exhibition support grants will underwrite 18 shows, including solo presentations for Joey Terrill at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Amanda Williams at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas at the Jewish Museum in New York, Precious Okoyomon at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and Abdias Nascimento at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Group exhibitions include “Terruño: Contemporary Photography and Sense of Place in the American Southwest” at the Harwood Museum of Art of the University of New Mexico in Taos, “Afterlives: Japanese American Artists and the Postwar Era” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and “Imperfect Balance” at the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
The 31 organizations receiving multi-year support include BlackStar in Philadelphia; the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute in New York; 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, California; Institute 193 in Lexington, Kentucky; Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA) in San Jose, California; Performance Space New York; and Vox Populi in Philadelphia. Curatorial fellowships went to Margot Norton, Valérie Rousseau, Natasha Becker, and Tie Jojima.
The cohort also includes 33 first-time grantees, among them Salmon Arts Creek in Albion, California; Yucca Valley Material Lab in Yucca Valley, California; and Art Shanty Projects in Minneapolis, which stages temporary artist-built shelters on frozen Lake Harriet. In a statement, program director Rachel Bers described visual arts organizations as incubators of new ideas and community anchors, while foundation chairman Joel Wachs said the grants are intended to support the artists and institutions shaping the field’s future.
