Los Angeles Museums were dormant while the pandemic’s restrictions were aimed at containing the spread of COVID-19. However, with the rollout of the vaccine and the emergence of cities to a new level, museums are preparing to welcome visitors in person. On March 10, the completion of the highly anticipated Renzo Piano Academy Film Museum announced that it will open its doors this fall. Earlier this week, KCRW announced that three more Los Angeles County museums are planning to reopen their doors.
Now that the region has moved into Red Tier status, one type of institution that has so often been lacking may return. Los Angeles Museums can now open their doors to visitors indoors for the first time in a year (commercial galleries were allowed to open earlier).
Here’s what we know about when the museums in Los Angeles will reopen. This list will be updated as new announcements become available.
Aquarium of the Pacific
All of the Long Beach Aquarium exhibits are now open to the public, including seasonal whale watching cruises and private animal encounters. Advance ticket purchase required.
Located along Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, the Pacific Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Southern California and a must-have Long Beach getaway for all ages. The aquarium, which contains more than 11,000 animal exhibits, explores three different areas of the Pacific Ocean.
The Southern California / Baja Gallery features a 142,000-gallon, three-story Honda Blue Cavern featuring ocean dwellers off the coast of Catalina Island. The Los Angeles museum has three main galleries and outdoor exhibits. They include an interactive shark lagoon, Lorikeet Forest aviary, penguin habitat, and a horseshoe crab sensory laboratory. Pacific Visions is the latest addition to the aquarium.
The Autry Museum of the American West
Members will be able to return to Autry starting March 30 and the general public will be welcome from April 6. Admission will be free until April 18th. Tickets must be booked in advance. The café will be closed on-site, but bottled water and packaged snacks will be available for purchase.
This one of Los Angeles museums was co-founded with Western star Gene Autry in 1988, so it’s natural that the museum has made space for cool memorabilia from Western films, from the pistols used by Steve McQueen to the costumes from 2005 Brokeback Mountain.
Every year it hosts a magnificent exhibition “Masters of the American West”, which presents the work of more than 70 Western artists.
The Broad Museum
Plans for The Broad to open in May have been confirmed, but details, including an exact date, are not yet available.
The Broad Museum is a post-war contemporary art museum built on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, California, the USA by philanthropists Eli and Edith Broad. The building of the Los Angeles museum of art houses about 2,000 works by about 200 artists from the collections of The Broad Art Foundation and Broads.
California African American Museum
The California African American Museum opens on March 27. The capacity was limited to 50 visitors per hour; Free reservations for specific times must be booked in advance. After the Los Angeles museums reopening, five exhibits are on display, including exhibitions dedicated to the artists Nikita Gaila and Sula Bermudez-Silverman.

The 44,000 square foot complex is located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Los Angeles, a block south of the University of Southern California (USC).
California Science Center
The California Science Center was open for visitors again on March 27th. Tickets became available to members on March 20 and to the general public on March 24. Speaking about Los Angeles museums reopening, it should be mentioned that the IMAX cinema will operate, but with limited bandwidth, and tickets will be sold online in advance. Families are advised to remember that all children over two years of age must wear a face mask and children must stay with their family at all times when visiting the museum.
One of the greatest Los Angeles museums is located in the heart of the 160-acre exhibition park on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles.
Getty Center and Villa
Preparations are underway for a safe opening. Although no date has yet been announced, the museums plan to begin phased openings in mid-April, starting at a small Villa and then at the Getty Center. Time-limited advance tickets will be required to enter, but they will be free; booking is not yet available.
LACMA
This one of the Los Angeles museums opens all galleries to the public effective April 1, 2021. Tickets went on sale online starting March 25 at 10 a.m.
One of the main attractions of LA is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The largest art museum in Los Angeles occupies 7 buildings on Wilshire Boulevard. Its collection includes over 120 thousand objects dating from antiquity to modern times. LACMA includes works from all over the world and almost the entire history of art.
Long Beach Museum of Art
Long Beach Museum of Art and LBMA Downtown. The Los Angeles museums reopening is at 25 percent capacity effective April 1; tickets are available online starting March 22.
Upon reopening, the main LBMA will feature a special exhibit, Decade by Decade: Women Artists of California. The waterside Claire’s at the Museum restaurant at LBMA will reopen on March 25.
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, La Brea Tar Pits, and William S. Hart Museum

Exhibits unveiled at the Los Angeles museum reopening will include Rise Up LA: Age of Voices for Women and Spiky, Hairy, Shiny: Insects of LA. La Brea Tar Pits will open on April 8th and tickets on sale will start on April 1st. the museum will remain closed.
