ECOLE DE PARIS AND OTHER MASTERS

ONLINE AUCTION ON DROUOT.COM, UNTIL 10 APRIL 2024

MacDougall’s is proud to present Wet Nurse with a Child – an exceptionally rare work by the 19th century Ukrainian artist A. Zelensky (Lot 16, 6,000-9,000 GBP). This work is being offered in the latest instalment of École de Paris and Other Masters which is now open for bidding on Drouot.com until 10 April.

Zelensky was born into a merchant family in Poltava in present-day Ukraine. The artist trained in Europe and at the Academy of Art in St Petersburg, quickly rising to prominence and regularly exhibiting in Russia and abroad.

Majority of the surviving oeuvre by Zelensky is in prestigious public collections, including an earlier version of Wet Nurse with a Child in the collection of the Rybinsk Museum. Zelensky seems to have turned to the subject of motherhood on several occasions – one of his works exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1852 was titled Wet Nurse – in Russian costume. Appearance of Zelensky’s superb work at auction presents an extraordinary opportunity for collectors.

Among the highlights of MacDougall’s spring sale are works by a number of celebrated masters who were born in Ukraine. This includes a magnificent seascape by I. Aivazovsky (Lot 18, 400,000-600,000 GBP), as well as works by A. Grishenko, V. Khmeluk, O. Braz, K. Trutovsky,

P. Kremegne and A. Archipenko.
